The Potassium blood test measures the level of potassium in your blood. Potassium is an essential electrolyte that plays a vital role in maintaining normal muscle function, nerve signalling and heart rhythm.

Monitoring potassium levels may be recommended before or during treatment with certain prescription medications or as part of routine clinical monitoring. Abnormal potassium levels can affect the normal function of muscles, nerves and the heart, making this an important test when requested by your healthcare professional.

Fasting: Fasting is not required for this test unless otherwise advised by your healthcare professional. Drink plenty of water before your appointment to help keep you hydrated.

Smoking & Gum: Please avoid smoking or chewing gum before your appointment.

Medication: Continue taking any prescribed medication as normal unless advised otherwise by your healthcare professional.

Exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours beforehand.

Arrival: Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
